“Sixty Inches From Center is a non-profit online arts publication and archiving initiative that supports and promotes art and writing that thrives primarily outside of mainstream historical narratives.
We forefront conversations that are by, about, and for communities that are often omitted from art history’s most widely circulated tellings by promoting artists, writers, and cultural workers across the spectrum of gender, race, ability, and being. Through arts writing, events, and collaborations we uplift the work of our region’s artists while also archiving their words and ephemeral materials digitally through our website and physically through an ongoing partnership with the Chicago Artists Files at the Harold Washington Library. We believe that the stories of contemporary artists, curators, organizers, advocates and writers who do work along the margins are key components to understanding history and need to be preserved and promoted simultaneously. Therefore, we work to engage local archives and to provide a platform and capsule for the voices that we feel deserve recognition and a dedicated space in history.”
